Of course, if you spill something on the rug and it doesn't come out, it needs to be cleaned.

Over time, your rug will accumulate dirt and odors.  Lift up a corner of the rug and then drop it: if dust flies, it is time to clean the rug.  You can also visually inspect the rug: get down close to it and look between the pile. If you can see dirt and dust, it is time to clean the rug.  While you are close to the rug, smell it.  A dank or musty smell means it is time to clean.
